Step 1: Preparation and Room Setup

As always, our first step is to prepare the room for painting and avoid any stressful mishaps. Remove all furniture out of the room if possible; if this is not possible for your project, ensure it is moved well away from the feature wall you will be painting. Lay a Seriously Good Double Protection Dust Sheet down and tape it in position using the Essentials Masking Tape to prevent any movement and potential slips.

Next, apply the Ultimate Fine Line Masking Tape or Seriously Good UV Tape to protect the ceiling, the skirting boards and any areas of detail, like door frames or light switches. You then need to repair any holes or cracks detected in the plasterwork. Check out our two great guides on repairing a hole or crack to examine these steps in more detail! Finally, use a Seriously Good Microfibre Cloth and some sugar soap to gently clean the wall and remove any dust. You don’t need to clean the whole wall, just areas which might have been touched a lot, such as areas around your plug sockets or light switches.

Use masking tape to protect parts of the wall before painting.

Step 2: Applying the Base Coat for Your Feature Wall

Before painting the feature wall mke sure you have a nice even base coat.

One of our top tips on painting a feature wall is to ensure a beautifully even base coat is applied to prepare the wall for your stunning top coat! If you have already begun painting the room and have a smooth, even base coat dried and ready to go then move onto Step 3! If you’re undertaking this painting task separately, head to our guide on how to paint a wall to master these steps like a professional!

Step 3: Creating Unique Design Patterns with Masking Tape

Now, there’s nothing wrong with having a simple feature wall with a single strong colour to illuminate the room, but assuming you want to create something a little more striking, we have the perfect tips to help make this possible. Take your Seriously Good UV Tape and begin to create shapes on the wall to create a unique, detailed effect. Triangles always look great to craft an ultra-modern, geometric look, but you can always see where your creativity takes you! For those looking for something outside the box, head to our social media pages or Tip Exchange for endless inspiration.

When you paint you feature wall start by making some interesting shapes with masking tape.

Top Tip: the Ultimate Fine Line Masking Tape and Seriously Good UV Tape is incredibly easy to peel off once you have crafted your masterpiece and prevents paint bleeding underneath.  For a perfect seal, be sure to run a Seriously Good Continental Filing Knife over the top of the tape. If the tape has been on the wall for an extended period of time, using a hairdryer to heat the adhesive is a great way to ensure it peels away easily!

Step 4: Selecting the Right Tools and Applying Paint for a Professional Finish

When painting a large feature wall use a 4 inch Mini roller or Powercoat roller.

If you’re wondering how to paint a feature wall with a gorgeous finish first time, it’s important to consider the correct tools for the job. We recommend using an Ultimate Walls & Ceilings Paint Brush to quickly cover the area, or a Seriously Good 4” Mini Roller if you have space. Both of these expert products will give you a phenomenal finish and facilitate must faster, more efficient working as opposed to standard products. Be sure to choose the brush that best fits your needs and the size of your pattern shapes!

If you are working on very large areas or have chosen just one colour for your pattern, double the amount of Seriously Good UV Tape around the edges and use the Ultimate Powercoat Roller to cover a large surface area smoothly and get finished fast.

Remember to build up your layers one at a time letting each dry first. Depending on the colours chosen and the quality of the paint used you could need multiple layers to achieve your desired look. You now have a head-turning feature wall that’s worthy of Pinterest and Instagram!
