1

Step 1: Prepare the Work Area and Protect Your Room

Before you start to fill a hole in the wall, we always recommend protecting the room to prevent inconvenient damage to your furniture or accessories. Move your furniture out of the room and away from the area you are working in. Next, use a Seriously Good Double Protection Dust Sheet to protect the floor. Don’t forget to tape it in place using some Essentials Masking Tape to ensure maximum security and prevent slips!

When repairing a hole in your wall, start by laying a dust sheet to protect the room.

Step 2: Prepare the Hole for Filling

The second step when fixing the hole is to remove any nails or screws.

When it comes to knowing how to fill holes in the wall, you must prep. Be sure to remove any nails, Rawlplugs or screws which might be stuck inside of the wall. Once these have all been removed, it’s time to open the hole out using an Ultimate Chisel Knife. This process will allow the filler to bind easily to the surface and apply smoothly.

For small holes, you can skip to Step 3 but if you have a wide or deeper hole in need of repair, begin by diluting some PVA glue in a small container of water. Next, paint the solution into the hole using a reliable Essentials Walls & Ceilings 0.5” Paint Brush. Creating the PVA solution is a fantastic hack as it seeps into the plaster making it more solid and more reliable when applying the filler in your third and final step!

Step 3: Apply Filler for a Seamless Surface

To fix the hole in your wall apply some filler with a filling knife.

Now for the transformative step; applying the filler! When it comes to how to fill a hole in the wall, and create a seamless wall ready for painting, the most important step is of course applying a quality filler and bidding farewell to those irritating imperfections! You need to apply your filler using the Ultimate Filing Knife to ensure a smooth and even coverage. Add the filler into the hole using the curved blade of your filing knife and ensure the filler meets the wall surrounding the hole to make sure the surface is even. If the hole is very wide or very deep you might need several layers of filler to achieve this. Be sure to follow the filler package instructions at all times to guarantee the best possible results.

Top tip: It is often necessary to add a layer of filler in 10mm (1cm) deep sections and then leave it to cure before adding the next layer. You can also wet the blade of the filing knife to get a smooth finish first time and eliminate the need for sanding on step 4!

Step 4: Sand and Prepare for Painting.

Once your filler has cured, you will need to take some Ultimate Fine Aluminium Oxide Paper to gently sand the filler down. Repeat this process using a Seriously Good Cork Block until a gorgeously smooth finish is achieved.

Then, clean the surface with a Seriously Good Microfibre Cloth making sure there is no dust remaining. Your walls are now free from holes, enviably smooth and ready for painting.
