FAQs

We recommend using the hot water hack primarily on synthetic brushes. Natural bristles (like hog hair) can be damaged by heat, making them brittle. For natural bristles, a mineral oil soak or a gentle reshaping while damp is better.

Fanning out is often a sign of a worn brush or one that has been pressed too hard during painting. It can also happen if paint is left to dry in the brush heel (near the ferrule). Regular, thorough cleaning is key to preventing this.

With proper care, a high-quality Harris brush can last for years, even decades. Consistent cleaning and correct storage are the biggest factors in tool longevity.

The ferrule is the metal band that connects the bristles to the handle. It's important because it holds the brush shape. Avoid soaking the ferrule in water or solvent, as this can cause the wooden handle to swell, the glue to fail, and the bristles to become loose or permanently bent.

If you are pausing for more than 30 minutes or changing colours, you should clean your brush immediately. Even during long painting sessions, occasionally working off excess paint and rinsing the tip (without soaking the ferrule) can prevent paint from drying in the heel of the brush, which is a major cause of fanning and bending.
