Is your garden deck looking a little bit sorry for itself? In this guide we’ll show you how to easily maintain and decorate your wooden garden decking in just 3 easy steps so you can enjoy it for years to come!
Start by removing all the outdoor furniture you have on your decking and take a look at what you are dealing with. If any sections are rotting or damaged, we suggest you fix those first before continuing.
If everything looks fine give your decking a good sweep with a broom and remove and leaves or dirt that might have built up over the year.
When you have the decking clear of leaves and dirt we recommend washing the wooden panels in a mixture of sugar soap and water. This is great for making the decking panels perfectly clean and will usually be fine for removing minor algae and mold build-up. If you have a lot of mold or algae on your decking there are specialty cleaners which can be very effective and these are available from all good hardware and DIY stores (like the one’s you can buy our brushes and decorating tools from).
Use the brush again to spread the soapy mixture around and when you are satisfied everything is as clean as it can be, allow the surface to dry and proceed to step 2.
(Optional). You can also lay a tarpaulin sheet down at this point to catch any drips from the paint. This is usually a good idea if you have artificial grass, stone slabs or other garden structures you don’t want to get paint on.
You’ve done the preparation work and now it’s time to start painting your decking! We’re going to start by going around the far edges of the decking with a Seriously Good 2 Inch Shed & Fence Brush. This will give you really nice neat lines and help you get into all the difficult cracks and spaces which are often neglected.
Why bother doing this? It’s simple really. These hard to reach areas usually receive less protective coatings and are often the areas where moister and rot will begin, so let’s make sure they are nicely covered. Once you have all the far edges done you can move onto step 3.
It’s finally time to paint your decking. Remember you don’t want to get caught on the wrong side of a freshly painted decking, unable to get back in your home without leaving foot prints in the paint. Work from the furthest point of the house in.
For speed we recommend using an Ultimate Swan Neck Shed & Fence Brush. However, if you want to go really fast and save your back in the process, we recommend combining the Ultimate brush with our Ultimate Extension Pole. The two will click together and you will be able to speed through painting the rest of your decking, on your feet and pain free. When you’re all done leave the paint to dry, move the furniture back and enjoy your new favourite summer spot!
